ABB has introduced a series of lunchtime CPD training in water systems courses. The certified System Efficiency training courses focus on improving the electrical efficiency of pump systems and save up to 20 percent in energy costs.

The Lunch ‘n’ Learn CPD training sessions are part of ABB’s 20+20 vision for improving customer outcomes in the water industry. The session covers the electrical infrastructure for greenfield and brownfield pump systems. In addition other courses include harmonic mitigation, water reliability and Totex.

Water and wastewater

In any water or wastewater facility, pumps are the biggest energy consumer. Therefore, optimising the electrical system driving those pumps improves efficiency. In this instance, an electrical system typically comprises a transformer, variable speed drive (VSD), electric motor, switchgear and cabling.

Firstly, the session focusses on how to design efficient pump systems. This includes accurately comparing manufacturers’ efficiency ratings to ensure pump systems are as efficient in operation as on paper. It also provides an understanding of how the interaction of various components within the pump’s electrical system can impact on overall efficiency-both positively and negatively.

Applying the knowledge improves the efficiency of existing pump systems. It shows how fine-tuning, replacing or adjusting components, efficiency gains of between five and ten percent are achievable. From the outset, pump systems for new sites can be fully optimised.

Optimising speed control

Secondly the session explores additional ways to improve the efficiency of installed pump systems by optimising the individual components in the electrical system. This includes methods of reducing pump speeds to provide savings. For example, how a 2 Hz reduction in speed is a 12 percent energy saving typically on a pump system. This can lead to savings of many thousands of pounds a year, depending on motor size
