The ACH550 Series HVAC inverter drives from ABB UK simplify the speed control of motors in buildings for pumps, fans and compressors, and provide an effective way to improve air quality and optimise energy use.

Fourteen HVAC specific application macros are pre-programmed and selectable without programming. The macros can be accessed via a detachable, intuitive control panel that is included with the ACH550 drive. The intelligence within the HVAC control panel means that the user is given direct and understandable instructions in clear text at all times.

Industry specific HVAC functionality, such as fireman’s override are included as well as HVAC set-up macros and HVAC keypad controls. BACnet is also embedded as standard in the drive as a BMS communications protocol. An energy monitoring counter allows energy usage to be returned over the BACnet link.

In commercial and industrial buildings, an HVAC system maintains the desired air quality by controlling temperature, pressure, humidity, air change and carbon dioxide content. These properties are effectively controlled by an air handling unit (AHU).

Air Handling Units

The AHU’s supply and return air fans feed air into, and extract it from the building. Air quality is measured using appropriate sensors located within the air ducts throughout the building. Measurements from these sensors determine the required fresh air flow.

By running motors at reduced speed lowers energy usage and this precise control of air quality leads to a healthier and more comfortable environment.  It also allows for smoother control which reduces mechanical stress on pumps, fans and compressors, leading to reduced maintenance costs and lower noise levels.

Embedded within the ACH550 drives are PID control, native BACnet communication, timers, real-time clock and a calendar.  The BACnet ensures integration into all leading building management systems (BMS). Alternatively the drives can be used independently of a BMS system.
