Schneider Electric UK inverters at 2014 MDS energy saving conference

Electric motor driven systems comprise a massive 40% of the world’s total electricity consumption. Many businesses however, are unaware of the energy saving technologies available to them which have the potential to significantly reduce costs, and in turn the global demand for electricity by 20% – 30%. MDS (Motor Driven Systems) presents a series of live events that focus a systems engineering approach to reduce energy, improve performance and ultimately save money.

Three steps for reducing total cost of ownership in pumping systems

by Nipun Sibal – Schneider Electric UK

One place to start is in pumping systems. Across industries, experts estimate that 25 percent of the electricity consumption comes from pumping systems and 40 percent of the overall lifecycle cost of a pumping system relates to energy. Variable speed AC drives are used to improve control and save energy in pumping applications.  In most cases,  pumps only need to operate at 60 percent of their full speed. By reducing the flow to 50 per cent, pump energy consumption could be reduced by up to 88 percent.

Services oriented drives manage these systems intelligently, and they can be employed in conjunction with energy management systems to optimise energy management. The real time intelligence of the complete pumping system, pump curve drift detection provides process optimisation and ensures real time reactivity.

Additional energy savings could be realised if the convergence in technologies made possible by modern services oriented drives were combined with excellence in electrical characteristics. For example, if AC drives with a THDi of  48 percent were replaced with low harmonic AC drives with a reduced THDi of 5 percent, users would realise a resulting energy savings of approximately 20 percent in the losses at the associated cables and transformers. Additional advantages of harmonic mitigation would include reduced costs by eliminating the need for over-sizing AC distribution
