Mitsubishi Electric has introduced a new interface module for the FX3U compact PLC, providing communications over J1939 networks.  The FX3U-J1939 communication module is an extension module for the FX3U PLC that enables Mitsubishi’s market leading compact PLC to connect to a J1939 system.

The FX3-J1939 module is suitable for use with Mitsubishi’s FX3U, FX3G, FX3GC and FX3UC Series processors. The module can be connected directly to the PLC’s extension port or to a connected extension unit.

J1939 Networks

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) developed the J1939 standard to be the preferred CAN network for equipment used in industries ranging from agriculture, construction, and fire/rescue to forestry, materials handling as well as on and off-highway vehicles. It is a high-level protocol that defines how communication between nodes (modules) occurs on the bus. The J1939 network is a specific communication system, supporting specific sets of applications and a specific industry, rather than being generalised.

The FX3U-J1939 supports the dedicated J1939 communication protocol. This allows for communication with engine control units, which mostly support this communication protocol. Thanks to predefined parameters and options, setup time is reduced to a minimum, even between multiple engine vendors.  NMEA2000® support makes usage on ships easier.

The J1939-PLC is suitable for mobile machinery using diesel engines and other J1939 compatible equipment. The company also provides NMEA2000 support in order to communicate with marine navigation systems and other devices compliant to IEC 61162-3.
