OEM selects i3 intelligent controller solution for biomass

An OEM producing biomass boiler controls systems had a requirement for a control system capable of operating as ‘standalone’ or as part of a networked system, where remote monitoring/ support could be offered.

The arduous operating environment however had caused problems for a number of PLCs and HMIs, so the IMO i3 integrated controller was evaluated as it satisfied the operational requirement of simple programming and remote connectivity options

IMO‘s i3 controllers offer a unique solution since it is both a PLC and HMI combined in one device. It is also small, very powerful and has many unique connectivity features. Remote monitoring, control and programming of devices can reduce service visits required and allow first class customer service to provide to end customers.

In the application, four temperature sensors are connected to an IMO 4 channel thermocouple module and Fan 1 and Pump 1 are connected to the IMO iDrive VSDs. Pump 2 is DOL, and all I/O are controlled by the i3.

Depending upon the values of the thermocouples, Fan 1 and Pump 1 speeds are adjusted to provide optimum performance of the boiler.  When pump 1 reaches maximum speed, pump 2 is operated, and pump 1 reverts to variable speed control as needed.

All performance data is stored on the i3 Micro SD card, for easy analysis of performance. As an option, the data can be transferred to a PC, enabling the Boiler to be remotely monitored and supported.

According to the integrator, “With the clearly laid out screens, commissioning of the boiler was very easily achieved and day to day operation is easily achieved with the simple control interface of the i3”

The i3 intelligent HMI controller enables the OEM to offer ‘off-the-shelf’ solutions to suit a variety of requirements, with minimal additional engineering input.”
