Energy saving for small motors in retail applications
ACS320 from ABB Drives UK is a compact drive for HVAC pump and fan applications up to 4 kW. The drive is programmed with several HVAC applications, including supply and extract fans, fume hoods, booster pumps and condensers.
Supply/extract fans
Extract fans are used for the removal of smoke, heat or, in areas like car parks, to vent out poisonous gases like carbon dioxide in accordance with part B and F of the Building Regulations. Where moisture is a concern the fans can reduce humidity that causes mildew.
Extract fans come with open motors for efficient cool running and low energy consumption and with sealed or enclosed motors for high dirt and grease applications such as those found within kitchen areas in certain retail environments.
While full extraction is only needed for a small amount of time within many such systems, most operate at a constant flow rate and restrict air-flow to particular parts of the building using vanes or dampers. Using a VSD here allows the flow rate to be reduced in order to meet the demands of the building at any given time, helping to reduce running costs.
Benefits of ACS320 for extract fans include:
– Reduced energy consumption
– Lower CO2 emissions
– Reduced stress on extraction equipment
– Meets part B and F of the Building Regulations
Fume hoods
Most fume hoods for kitchen areas are ducted. Air is removed from the workspace and dispersed into the atmosphere. The fume hood is only one piece of the ventilation system.
To reduce ventilation costs, variable air volume systems are employed, which reduce the volume of the air extracted as the fume hood sash is closed. This product is often enhanced by an automatic sash closing device, which will close the fume hood sash when the user leaves the fume hood face. The result is that the hoods are operating at the minimum extract volume all of the time that no one is actually working in front of them.
Benefits of ACS320 for fume hoods include
– Reduced energy consumption
– Lower CO2 emissions
– Reduced stress on extraction equipment
– System better matched to day-to-day requirements
Set-up and control of the ACS320 is intuitive and simple, allowing easy integration with building automation systems through embedded communication languages, such as BACnet. The ACH550 is a complimentary HVAC drive for applications up to 355 kW
