PPMA machine safety seminar places in September and October 2013
The Processing and Packaging machinery Association (PPMA) has organised a series of machinery safety seminars taking place during September and October 2013. Topics include robot safety in automation, practical machinery safety/PUWER, functional safety, and machinery guarding. Places are currently available at all venues.
1. Safety in Automation & Robot Integration
This is a one-day seminar on 5th September 2013 at the Carlton Hotel, Dublin Airport Marriott.
Robots are usually supplied as partly completed machinery, requiring the integrator to be responsible for the ‘CE’ marking of the cell. This Seminar is aimed at companies using, purchasing, designing and manufacturing machines incorporating industrial robots and discusses some of the issues regarding ‘CE’ marking of complex assemblies, and the requirements of the various standards including:-
EN ISO 10218-1:2011 Robots & Robotic Devices – Safety Requirements for Industrial Robots – Part 1: Robots and Part 2: Robot Systems & Integration. Areas covered include:
– ‘CE’ Marking
– BS EN ISO 10218 – Parts 1 & 2
– Hazard Identification
– Risk Assessment & Risk Reduction
– Safety & Safeguarding
– Safety Requirements & Safety Related Control Systems

2. Practical Machinery Safety-PUWER
This one-day seminar on 12th September 2013 at Manchester Airport Marriott Hotel provides an overview of the changes and the regulations. Subjects covered include:-
– Regulation 6: Inspection
– Regulation 10: Conformity with Community Requirements
– Regulations 11-24 in detail;
– User Requirement Specification
3. Functional Safety/Control Integrity Seminar
This one-day seminar on 10th October 2013 at the Marriott Hotel, Northampton provides an overview of the standards and how to apply them. Subjects covered include:-
– EN ISO 13849-1
– Identify Safety Functions
– Define Performance Level
– Architecture and Categories
– Mean Time to failure
– Diagnostic Coverage
– Common Cause Failures
– Soſtware
– Case Study

4. Machinery Guarding: The Application of EN Standards
This one-day seminar on 24th October 2013 at the Carlton Hotel, Dublin Airport provides an overview of the changes and the regulations.
Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC includes machine guarding on the indicative list of safety products that require CE Marking. Companies who want to add additional guarding need to be aware of their responsibilities under the Machinery Directive especially if they are making and installing the guarding themselves. Subjects covered include:-
– Overview of CE and PUWER with respect to guarding
– Introduction to EN Standards
– Safety Related Control Systems
– EN 953
– EN ISO 13855
– EN ISO 13857
– EN ISO 10218-2
