British Airways saves more than energy with Altivar 61

Fitted with Telemechanique Altivar inverter drive ATV61 from Schneider Electric

British Airways (BA) has incorporated Schneider Electric’s Altivar 61 variable speed drives (VSDs) into the condenser water pump system at its Flight Training facilities at Heathrow Airport. The solution has resulted in a significant energy saving and overcome problems with the system.

In the main boiler house there are three centrifuge condenser water pumps. Two of the pumps operate on line and the third is in place as a standby. They are used to pump condenser water up to the 12 banks of dry air coolers on the roof where the heat is dissipated.

By fitting the ATV 61 variable speed inverter drives, pressure in the system was reduced 6.5 bar to 2.5 bar.  As a result the 90kw compressors are typically running at 12kW and the noise levels have also dropped significantly. This also helps prolong the life of the pipe work, filters and system, whilst providing a more comfortable working environment when carrying out routine maintenance and checks in the boiler house.”
