Omron RX2 VSD offers triple duty ratings amongst new features


For organisations seeking ways to reduce energy consumption it is important to evaluate the performance of both their existing systems and products. Evaluating new products also forms an important part of this activity. If you’re not going forwards, you’re going backwards, and using VSDs that offer triple duty ratings is a good starting point

Omron Automation has introduced the new RX2, a versatile high-performance auto-tuning VSD offering improved performance and energy savings. It is intended to meet the changing demands of improved productivity, quality and reliability, along with easy customisation. The drive’s auto-tuning function maximises energy saving performance when used with PM motors.

Triple duty ratings

The RX2 meets the requirements of wide range of machinery applications from filling control and press working to tension control. It is also suitable for both permanent magnet (PM) motors and induction motors. Power rating are 0.4-55 kW for 200V class and 0.75-123 kW for 400V class. The 200V models are IP20 and 400V models IP20 or IP00 chassis mounting forms.

Whereas the previous RX model was dual rated, the new RX2 has three motor rating options. Normal duty (ND) at 150% overload for 60 seconds or 200% for three seconds. Light duty (LD) at 120% for 60 seconds or 150% for 3 seconds or the new very light duty (VLD) at 110% for 60 seconds or 120% for 3 seconds rating. This makes possible to use a single inverter for a wide range of motor applications, minimizing footprint and maximizing performance.

The RX2 series maintains the same mounting dimensions as the previous RX model, offering an easy replacement to existing control panel and mounting locations. In addition, it works with the existing CX-Drive software. Using this software, users can convert parameter settings and programs from the previous model and transferred them to the new RX2 inverters. Moreover, the new full-colour LCD interface makes setup and operation intuitive and easy. The parameter copy function allows users to clone settings to other RX2 inverters.

The RX2 can also perform simple sequence control programmed using the CX-Drive support software. Positioning functionality for crane control, tension control, and other large-scale processes that need fast control speeds does not need a separate PLC, reducing costs. The RX2 offers sensor-less and vector closed-loop control with a high open loop starting torque of 200% at 0.3 Hz or full torque at 0 Hz in closed loop.

Optimized costs, safety and connectivity

In addition, the RX2 features Safe Torque Off (STO) as a standard feature to meet machine safety needs. Certification is to IEC 61800-5-2:2016 STO SIL3 and ISO 13849-1:2015 Cat.4 PLe safety standards.

The integrated noise filter conforms to the EMC Directive (IEC61800-3 2nd Environment Category C3 and UL Power Conversion Equipment/UL61800-5-1). Communications options also include Profibus. Profinet and Modbus, with an EtherCAT option to follow

Furthermore, upgrading to the RX2 is a simple way for existing RX users to access the faster and intuitive features and triple duty ratings.
